“I am disappointed that the governor did not veto legislation that would eliminate the ‘100-foot rule’ for natural gas hookups to buildings and that she has, sadly, chosen to continue to pursue an energy agenda that is unaffordable and unreliable.
As a result of signing this bill, the cost – potentially ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 per building – of natural gas hookups will now shift from utility companies to future homeowners.
This additional expense will further exacerbate the state’s housing affordability crisis and limit access to the most reliable heating source available.
The governor signing this legislation is also clear evidence that she is not genuinely looking to reconsider or reverse some of the detrimental energy policies that have been implemented over the last several years.
Since New York has been under one-party control and the leadership of the governor and Democratic majorities in the Legislature, we have seen problematic policies such as this bill that have created significant challenges for residents and their families who are already struggling.
As a result, more and more New Yorkers cannot afford to live here and have fled the state in search of better opportunities elsewhere. Unfortunately, those who remain have been and will be forced to carry more and more of the burden.”
