GRIFFO, BRINDISI SECURE FUNDING FOR AREA MUNICIPALITIES TO COVER ROAD AND BRIDGE REPAIRS DUE TO YEAR’S EXTREME WINTER WEATHER

In March, Both Legislators Wrote Governor Cuomo Seeking Assistance for Communities to

Help Defray Costs for Damage to Infrastructure from Winter Storm Stella

Utica & Rome Each Will Receive More Than $100,000 in Extreme Winter Weather Funding;
Other Towns & Villages Throughout Region Also To Share Part of $65 Million in State Support to Localities

UTICA – State Senator Joseph Griffo of Rome and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi of Utica announced today that area municipalities will share a portion of the $65 million in state funding made available to help localities shoulder the costs from Winter Storm Stella and other Extreme Winter Weather.

Shortly after Winter Storm Stella dumped as much as 4 feet of snow on the region in March, both Senator Griffo and Assemblyman Brindisi wrote Governor Cuomo to request supplemental assistance for communities in the Mohawk Valley to help cover costs associated with Stella and other extreme weather over the winter.

The City of Utica will receive $195,154 from this funding, while Rome will get $138,602. Towns and villages throughout the region also will share in the allocation. (NOTE: A chart with the amounts that area municipalities will receive can be found at the end of this news release.)

State Senator Joseph Griffo said: “When upstate New York was walloped this past winter with ice and snow, our local municipalities were the ones left digging us out. But as some of our aging roads and bridges now need to be repaired as a result of this severe seasonal weather, our municipalities cannot handle these important projects alone. Strong and safe roadways are vital to the progress of our communities, and I am glad to have helped secured these additional investments to provide our municipalities the resources they need to strengthen our infrastructure.”

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi said: “The condition of roads is a safety issue, and it is something I hear from local residents who depend on a reliable road system to travel to and from work and school, and for many other reasons. I am pleased that we were able to include additional funding to help municipalities repair damage from one of the worst winter storms in recent memory.”

Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said: “The response to Winter Storm Stella truly brought out the best in our community as resources and personnel from the State, County and local municipalities came together to ensure the safety of our residents.  I commend and thank Senator Griffo and Assemblyman Brindisi for once again delivering for Utica as their tireless advocacy in securing this additional funding is a tremendous help.”
