GlobalFoundries Set for $300M CHIPS Award to Advance AI

What Is Silicon Photonics?
Silicon photonics is a technology that uses light to transfer information through computer systems.
Traditional electronic systems largely move information through copper connections and electrical signals. As data volumes increase, those connections can become bottlenecks, slowing performance and increasing energy use.
Silicon photonics uses tiny optical components placed on or near semiconductor chips. Those components can transmit information through pulses of light.
