In a series of alarming events, three swimmers were injured in separate shark attacks along Florida’s coast in early June 2024. These incidents occurred at Fort Myers Beach and Playalinda Beach, raising concerns among beachgoers and authorities alike.

Fort Myers Beach Incidents

On June 7, 2024, two separate shark attacks took place at Fort Myers Beach. The first victim, a 45-year-old man named Dustin Theobald, was bitten on his foot while surfing. Theobald described the attack, saying, “At first, all I felt was pressure. I didn’t feel any real pain. I just felt something grab me.” Despite the severity of his injuries, which included significant damage to the tendons and a large laceration, Theobald managed to alert other beachgoers and his son to get out of the water. He received immediate medical attention and was later hospitalized for surgery. His recovery is expected to take several months【source】.

Shortly after Theobald’s attack, a 17-year-old male swimmer was also bitten on the foot. This second incident prompted authorities to raise double-red flags, closing the beach to ensure the safety of other swimmers【source】.

 Playalinda Beach Incident

A third attack occurred on June 7, 2024, at Playalinda Beach in the Canaveral National Seashore, about three hours south of Fort Myers. A 14-year-old girl was bitten on the leg while swimming. The severity of her injuries necessitated an airlift to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. These recent attacks highlight a concerning trend in Florida, which already leads the nation in shark attack incidents. Despite this, experts emphasize that the likelihood of encountering a shark remains extremely low. Theobald himself noted, “We know they [the sharks] are out there… It’s one in a million thing. Nothing is going to change with me”【source】.
