New York-sired horses will take the spotlight during Sunday racing
Vernon, N.Y. – October 11, 2017 – Two- and three-year-old New York-sired horses will be in the spotlight during the Excelsior Finals at Vernon Downs on Sunday, October 15.
The $360,000 Excelsior Finals are the culmination of the season-long Excelsior Series held at all of the state’s harness tracks. The races are restricted to 2-year-old and 3-year-old New York-sired horses of both gender and both gait, and are part of the larger New York Sire Stakes series. This is the first time all 8 Finals are being held at Vernon Downs, which has hosted finals for 3-year-olds previously and the Sire Stakes Finals back in 2009.
Many of the state’s top drivers and trainers will be racing at Vernon Downs for the occasion, and the track’s racing will be showcased to a national audience along the VD Simulcast Network.
The special Sunday night card begins at 6:45 p.m., and will feature $1 food and drink specials, such as $1 hot dogs, popcorn, sodas and 10-oz draft beer plus $1 programs. There will also be a free-to-enter handicapping contest with a $250 first place prize.
In addition to its video lottery terminals, Vernon Downs offers live harness racing, concerts and other entertainment. Jeff Gural owns Vernon Downs in Vernon, NY and Tioga Downs in Nichols, NY.
