FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The campus of Morrisville State College will be home to 4-H youth from across the state for a weekend of “life as a college student” during Equine and Dairy 101 4-H Camp. The camp will be held May 19 & 20 and is designed to give 4-H youth ages 13-19 a chance to learn more about the equine and dairy industry, career options in the field, and educational opportunities offered at the college. All “courses” will be taught by the equine and dairy faculty and staff of Morrisville State College (MSC), as well as other industry professionals.
Many hands-on activities will be provided for the youth as they follow either the dairy or equine tract. Dairy students will focus on crops, soils, harvesting and dairy cattle nutrition. There will be classroom sessions and hands-on activities along with tours that will complement the classroom work.
Equine students will be given the opportunity for hands-on activities through the English, Western, Draft, and Racing tracks at MSC. Youth will visit the MSC Standardbred breeding facility and view mares as they are ultra sounded at different stages of pregnancy. The students will evaluate sperm mobility under the microscope and view a real equine reproductive tract. Several guest speakers will visit with the youth about career opportunities in equine and the importance of being an educated advocate for the industry.
The cost of the program is $100 per participant ($75 per chaperone). This includes all materials, meals and overnight accommodations. If you are a current 4-H member in NYS, you may go online to register at https://reg.cce.cornell.edu/2017EquineAndDairy101-2_221
