The Whitesboro celebration will also introduce visitors to the library’s newly constructed second-floor addition.
WHITESBORO, N.Y. — Dunham Public Library will celebrate its 100th anniversary Wednesday, October 28, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that brings together a century of community service and a look at the library’s next chapter.
The Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce announced the event in an October 20 media alert sent by Marketing Coordinator Grace Monaco. The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. at the library, 76 Main Street in Whitesboro.
Community members and media are encouraged to attend. Guests will also be able to explore the library’s newly constructed second-floor addition, according to the alert.

A new addition accompanies the centennial
The celebration will recognize both the anniversary and the newly constructed second-floor addition. Visitors will have an opportunity to see the new space as part of the event, according to the Chamber.
The media alert did not specify the addition’s cost, funding sources or a room-by-room description of its uses. It also did not provide details about accessibility arrangements for the event. Visitors who need that information should contact organizers before attending.
A library rooted in local history
The anniversary reflects a longstanding connection between the Dunham family and the Whitesboro community. A historical account accompanying the library’s board minutes in New York Heritage records its charter and incorporation on October 28, 1926.
That account traces the library to the former home of Reverend Moses Dunham. His son, George Earl Dunham, left property and money for the establishment of a public library. The collection’s history identifies August 8, 1927, as the library’s official opening date, distinguishing the charter anniversary from the opening of the building to readers.
The account also records a 1937 rechartering to serve the geographical area of the Whitesboro School District. The library’s history reaches beyond one village, connecting it with neighboring Mohawk Valley communities.
How to take part
