Dr. Barbara Rhodes, a Ph.D. graduate in Rhetoric and Linguistics from Indiana
University, reluctantly agreed to discuss her autobiography, “In Search of a Family,” at
MVCC Rome Campus as part of a MVLILR book tour. Appointed Assistant Professor of
English in 1988 at Mohawk Valley Community College, where she was among the first
Afro-American faculty members, Dr. Rhodes has received numerous awards, including
the MVCC Excellent in Teachers Award and the SUNY Chancellor Award for
Excellence.
Despite her achievements and polished appearance, Dr. Rhodes faced significant
challenges, including verbal abuse and food insecurities, and was unaware of her
adoption until later in life. Her story began tragically when she was left on a train track at
two years old and subsequently rescued by a neighbor. This compelling narrative
underscores the deceptive nature of appearances and the profound impact of her early
experiences.
Facing segregation and discrimination, Barbara took a job as a stenographer and
pursued education at Creighton College, inspired by figures like Ossie and Ruby Davis.
With her husband Ron’s support, she continued her education and creative writing while
traveling with him on Air Force bases. They shared over 50 years together, and her
life’s motto, from Philippians 4:16, reflects her resilience and faith. If you’re interested in
themes of redemption and resilience, consider reading her book, “In Search Of a
Family.”
