Deerpark Fatal Crash Claims Life of 69-Year-Old Local Man
State Police are asking witnesses to come forward as investigators work to determine why the vehicle left Peenpack Trail.
A Deerpark fatal crash claimed the life of a 69-year-old Sparrowbush man Wednesday morning after his vehicle left Peenpack Trail, struck several trees and continued into a residential driveway, according to New York State Police.
Police identified the driver as Robert S. Jahn of Sparrowbush. He was removed from the damaged vehicle and transported to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown, where he later died from his injuries.
The circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway remain under investigation. State Police have not announced whether speed, a medical emergency, a mechanical problem, road conditions or another factor contributed to the collision.
What Happened on Peenpack Trail?
Troopers from the State Police barracks in Greenville responded to Peenpack Trail in the Orange County town of Deerpark at about 9:25 a.m. Wednesday, July 29.
Investigators said Jahn was traveling east in a 2007 Ford when the vehicle veered to the right and left the roadway.
The Ford then:
- Sideswiped several trees
- Entered a driveway along Peenpack Trail
- Struck an unoccupied 2023 Chevrolet
- Sideswiped a trailer
- Came to rest against an earthen embankment
No one was reported to have been inside the Chevrolet when it was struck. The State Police release did not report injuries to any other person.
Emergency personnel extricated Jahn from the Ford before he was taken to the Middletown hospital. Police said he later “succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.”
Police Have Not Determined the Cause
The State Police described the Deerpark fatal crash as an active investigation and did not identify a confirmed cause.
That distinction matters. Although investigators reported that the Ford veered off the road, that fact alone does not explain why it happened.
Authorities have not said whether Jahn experienced a health emergency or whether a vehicle, environmental or roadway condition played a role. There also has been no announcement of criminal conduct or traffic violations connected to the crash.
“The investigation is ongoing,” State Police said in the July 30 release.

In this case, the Ford was the only moving vehicle described by police. The Chevrolet it struck was unoccupied and parked in a driveway.
