Community Foundation Unveils Two New Ways to Give

UTICA, NY – The Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties is excited to introduce two new ways for individuals and families to give back: Charitable Checking Accounts and the Mohawk Valley Giving Guide. Designed with convenience and flexibility in mind, these tools empower individuals to support the causes they care about. Whether someone is new to charitable giving or looking for a more personalized approach to philanthropy, these new options make it easier than ever to support the community.
Charitable Checking Accounts are a new offering at the Community Foundation designed to help individuals and families manage their charitable giving with ease. Created to make generosity more accessible, these accounts offer a simple, convenient path to supporting causes that matter. There’s no minimum balance, no annual fees, and opening an account takes just a few minutes.
“Most people think very seriously about their personal finances, opening accounts to save for retirement, for their kid’s college education, and even for health care expenses,” explained Morgan LaBella, fund development manager at the Community Foundation. “I would argue that the same should be done for an individual’s charitable giving, because it plays a key role in many people’s financial picture and often comes with valuable tax advantages. I am pleased that the Community Foundation now offers such a modern and unique way for donors to streamline their giving.”
In addition to convenience, Charitable Checking Accounts can provide valuable tax advantages and are managed through an easy-to-use online portal. Account holders can track contributions, view fund activity in real time, and make grants to nonprofits with just a few clicks. Accounts can be established via check, credit card, appreciated securities, or even through automatic withdrawals from an existing checking or savings account. The minimum age to establish an account is 18. Charitable Checking Accounts also offer the ability for donors to remain anonymous when giving to the nonprofit(s) they support.
A benefit of establishing a Charitable Checking Account, as opposed to giving directly to a nonprofit organization, is being able to streamline philanthropy (one receipt, one platform) and gain access to the Community Foundation’s team of experts to learn about new nonprofits and their needs through things like the Mohawk Valley Giving Guide.
The Mohawk Valley Giving Guide is a community-wide resource designed to bridge people looking to give with local nonprofit needs across our region. Through an easy-to-use online tool, the Mohawk Valley Giving Guide highlights nonprofit organizations and the projects, programs, or needs they are seeking support for. Each listing includes a brief summary about the organization’s funding request, helping donors better understand where their generosity can make an impact. Anyone can donate to projects in the Mohawk Valley Giving Guide by credit card or check, making it simple to support multiple nonprofit needs in one transaction and give at a level that feels right for them.
“The Mohawk Valley Giving Guide makes it easier than ever for donors to connect with the real needs of nonprofit organizations across our region,” said Ely Arnone-Earl, fundholder and community engagement strategist at the Community Foundation. “By bringing these opportunities together in one place, donors can easily learn about organizations and their current needs. For Charitable Checking Account holders, it also offers the added convenience of supporting opportunities that are of interest to them directly from their account.”
