Commemorate 250th anniversary of nation’s founding during ‘Path Through History’ at CCHS

NORWICH, N.Y. – The Chenango County Historical Society (CCHS) will again participate in the semi-annual state-wide festivities known as “Path Through History” weekend on Oct. 10. As part of the celebration, the museum is hosting activities to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, including interactive presentations by the Chenango Canal Association and the Chenango Valley Amateur Radio Association.

From 10 a.m. to noon, the Otselic Valley Fishing & Heritage Association presents “From Turtle Island to Independence Hall: America’s Fight for Liberty and Justice for All.” Oneida Indian Nation storyteller Ron Patterson will tell the Creation Story and answer any questions about Turtle Island and the role that the Haudenosaunee played in the founding of the U.S. democracy.

CCHS will commemorate Chenango250 by unveiling two exhibitions: “Chenango County in Fifty Stories” and “Revolutionary New York.” The American War for Independence raged from 1775 to 1783, but the ideas of the American Revolution did not end there. From the Battles of Saratoga to the birth of the Women’s Suffrage Movement at Seneca Falls to the Stonewall Uprising in 1969, New York has remained at the heart of this continuing Revolution. In honor of our nation’s 250th birthday, the New York State Museum proudly presents “Revolutionary New York,” a traveling panel display honoring the New Yorkers who launched the great American experiment in 1776 — and the bold leaders who, through social revolutions, have fought to make its promises real. In addition, an exhibit refresh of “Chenango County in Fifty Stories” will offer a glimpse into how regional heritage extends beyond Chenango County’s borders, with local narratives specifically related to the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding.

First established in 1939, CCHS is the area’s premier heritage museum dedicated to celebrating local culture — its unique traditions and noteworthy stories. CCHS programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. CCHS is also a proud partner of Bloomberg Connects, an app that allows visitors to enhance their exhibit experience through audio clips, videos, and more. Download this free digital museum guide via the Apple Store or Google Play, and visit www.ChenangoHistorical.org for more details about this and other museum programs.

During “Path Through History” weekends, special events like this are held to highlight historically and culturally significant sites while offering new perspectives on New York state’s heritage. For more information, visit www.ChenangoHistorical.org or call (607) 334-9227, ext. 2.
