CABVI Seeking Counselors for Summer Camp Abilities

UTICA, NY…The Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired is seeking sports camp counselors for the 2026 summer Camp Abilities, an empowering youth development program that allows young people ages 8 -15 with low vision to experience traditional youth camp activities in a fun and safe environment.
Camp Abilities will be held July 26 through 31 at Utica University with a full day spent at the Adirondack Mountains and Camp Nazareth in Woodgate.  Sports camp counselors begin Saturday, July 25 for orientation and training.
In this paid position, sports camp counselors are people ages 18 and above who are interested in experiencing new challenges and making a difference in young people’s lives.
Campers will engage in outdoor recreation, fitness, group adaptive sports, independent living skills training, orientation and mobility activities, safe travel techniques, orientation mobility skills training, vocational experiences and information seminars.
Sports camp counselors assist in daily camp activities, often participating alongside the camper dealing with issues related to overcoming fear, building self-confidence, trying new experiences, and achieving success.
Sports camp counselors also work with campers to help them establish friendships and positive relationships with fellow campers and others at camp and build a quick rapport with parents of campers to ensure that they are comfortable with the camp experience providing information, emotional support and confidence in their role and the camp program.
