CABVI Honors Guide Dog Month

UTICA, NY — September marks National Guide Dog Month, a time to honor the extraordinary role guide dogs play in empowering individuals who are blind or visually impaired.  Throughout the month, the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) is highlighting the vital role these dogs play in promoting independence, safety, and confidence—and celebrating the journey of Iris, a future guide dog sponsored by CABVI in partnership with Freedom Guide Dogs.
Guide dogs are more than mobility aids— they’re life-changing companions.  According to the International Guide Dog Federation, there are approximately 18,682 guide dogs actively working worldwide, with 2,893 new guide dogs trained in 2024.  In the United States, fewer than 10,000 guide dog teams are currently active, despite more than 12 million adults living with a vision impairment.
The benefits of guide dogs extend far beyond navigation.  Guide dogs provide enhanced mobility, emotional support, and increased social interaction, helping people regain independence and confidence in their daily lives.  CABVI’s sponsorship of Iris reflects its ongoing commitment to support programs that empower people who are blind or visually impaired.
