We invite members of the media to attend and cover this heartfelt community event. Assemblywoman Buttenschon will present a New York State Legislative Resolution she sponsored and passed in the Assembly, officially proclaiming October 28th as First Responders Day in the State of New York.
In partnership with William T. Cole of Gates-Cole Insurance, the event will also feature free coffee and donuts for first responders, as well as an awards ceremony recognizing local heroes. Chiefs from fire, police, and ambulance agencies across the Mohawk Valley were invited to nominate a member of their department who goes above and beyond in service to others. Each nominee will be honored and presented with a certificate during the event.
We ask that media plan to arrive by 9:00 AM.

Follow-Up: First Responders Appreciation Day — Additional Story Highlight
Good afternoon,
As a follow-up to today’s First Responders Appreciation Day event hosted by Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon in partnership with Gates-Cole Insurance, I wanted to share an especially moving moment that unfolded near the close of the ceremony.
Correction Officer Luis Roman from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office attended the event and shared his personal story, thanking the first responders who helped save his life, several of whom were in the room being honored that very morning.
During a medical emergency earlier this year, Officer Roman was exposed and required immediate assistance. His coworker, Correction Officer Bradley Chapman, provided life-saving care and administered Narcan, while Paramedic Kristopher Joseph from Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps (COCVAC) transported Officer Roman to the hospital and stayed by his side until his family arrived.
The emotional exchange between Officer Roman, his family, and the first responders who saved him was a profound reminder of what this day truly represents, the compassion, bravery, and humanity that define our local heroes.
