Bus driver arrested for alleged DWI while driving students

A bus driver has been arrested after allegedly driving a bus full of Cohoes girls’ basketball players while under the influence.

State police say it happened Friday night on I-88 in Schoharie. Troopers say they pulled the driver of the bus over after the girls’ coach called 911 to report that the bus driver was driving erratically.

Troopers say the driver, 43-year-old Harry Oliver of Troy, failed a roadside sobriety test and later blew a .06, which is over the legal limit for the type of vehicle he was driving.

Police arrested Oliver on three counts of driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law and 11 counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

The Cohoes School District superintendent says Oliver was contracted out to drive the girls, and that he is an employee of Durham School Services.

“This incident is obviously concerning and the district is taking this very seriously,” said Superintendent Peggy O’Shea in a statement. “We have reached out to Durham for a review of their hiring, screening and training protocols that are in place to make sure students are safely transported to and from school events. The safety of our students is our highest priority, and we are committed to doing everything possible to ensure their well-being both on school property and while being transported to and from school events.”

“I want to commend the coach for her quick actions in addressing the situation,” O’Shea continued, “and thank the team for remaining calm and providing support to each other during this incident.”
