In memory of Frank Gruenewald and Everett Smith
The Betsy Concert Series 30th year will conclude on Thursday, August 31, 2017, with The Floyd Community Band performing at 6 pm till 8 pm with a FIREWORK EXTRAVAZANA at dusk. Food and drink provided by Marcy Bar & Grill for purchase.
It’s new location at Marcy Town Park Pavilion, at 9455 Toby Road, Marcy, has been embraced with growing number of attendees each and every week.
This concert series started back in 1987 when New York State provided a barge for towns and villages to use the Erie Canal System. The weekly concert series at Lock 20 was one if not the original, weekly free summer park concert series in the area. Frank Gruenewald and Everett Smith were the back bones of this growing event.
In 1996 the Pavilion at lock 20 was built by volunteer labor and dollars that Frank and Everett organized and overseen. At its completion, the concerts moved under the pavilion and carried on. In the following years, the larger Pavilion at Marcy Town Park was built with Frank and Everett’s oversight. And this year the concert series was moved to this Pavilion.
Frank Gruenewald passed just prior to the start of the 26th season. At that time Everett Smith and friend Diane Szablak carried on. With declining health, Everett was not able to partake in 2016 concert series and passed on in January 2017.
This year was dedicated to both men for all their dedicated hard work they enjoyed giving to make the community and Town of Marcy a better place. It happened by the combined efforts of Karen Smith, Diane Szablak, Marcy Town Board, and Marcy Chamber of Commerce Board, local business donations, and contributions from appreciative audiences.
Thank You from the Gruenewald and Smith families!
