Artist Julia Jacquette to Lead Tour of Her Hamilton College Exhibition

Artist Julia Jacquette will lead a gallery walk-through of her solo exhibition on display at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College on Tuesday, April 11, at 4:15 p.m. The tour and the discussion that follows are part of the Wellin Museum’s Artists in Conversation series. Both are free and open to the public.

Comprising paintings, site-specific murals, and a series of gouache drawings, Unrequited and Acts of Play marks Julia Jacquette’s first major museum retrospective. The exhibition, on display through July 2, was curated by Tracy L. Adler, the Johnson-Pote Director of the Wellin Museum.

Jacquette’s work focuses on commercialized objects of desire: images of food from cookbooks from the 1950s and 1960s, ornate interiors of the wealthy, and liquors from glossy magazine ad campaigns, among other subjects.

In a graphic memoir titled Playground of My Mind, Jacquette turns her attention to the “adventure playgrounds” built in New York City and Amsterdam during the 1970s. This project exists as a series of original gouache drawings on view at the Wellin.
