Amelia Wood eyes one final run with Averill Park

Whenever Amelia Wood takes the court for Averill Park, Head Coach Sean Organ know’s what he’s going to get every night.

“She’s a rugged veteran,” Organ says. “She know’s what it takes to compete. She’s just an ultimate competitor.”

Entering her fifth year on the varsity team, Amelia has accomplished just about everything you can on the court. Notably, she’s a 3-time Section 2 champion. And all 3 of those coming with her sister Kelsey by her side.

What You Need To Know

  • Amelia Wood is one of the best hoopers in Section II
  • She’s enjoyed incredible success with Averill Park
  • She’s ready to lead the Warriors to another Section II crown before rejoining her sister, Kelsey, at Sacred Heart next year

“She’s definitely taught me to be who I am today,” Wood says of her sister. “She’s not only my older sister, but she’s my best friend. We talk everyday. She tells me what I’m doing wrong, what I’m doing right and what I should improve on. She’s a big inspiration to me.”

The run with her sister is something Amelia will never forget. But the run is not over yet. Amelia is set to rejoin her sister next year at Division I Sacred Heart and will look to carry the success at the high school level in college.

“Just knowing that I’m going to Sacred Heart next year just makes me want to push harder now during Averill Park basketball,” Wood says. “Going D-1 next year just shows my hardworking is paying off right now.”

As much as she’s grown her game, Amelia always looks to help her teammates reach their goals and write their names into Averill Park history.

“I’ve always looked up to her,” sophomore Taylor Holohan says. “When she was in 8th grade and I was in 6th grade on modified, I was always inspired to be like her. She always pushed me to be my best, same with Kelsey. I want to be just like both of them. They’re amazing people.”

The chance to see Amelia and Kelsey play again certainly lingers in the minds of everyone on the team but they’re also not looking too far ahead. The season is still young for this group of Warriors. Everything they want is right in front of them.

“Our mindset is to come into the gym everyday ready to compete,” Wood says. “Compete and make each other better. That’s what makes us better. competing against each other and and making sure everyone else get better.

“It’ll be a really special moment when that day comes but until then we want to soak up every little last bit of Amelia we can before she’s off to bigger and better things,” Organ says.
