On behalf of the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators, state Sen. Joseph Griffo and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon today presented the Senator John J. Marchi Memorial Scholarship for Athletic Achievement to Alyssa Capuana. The scholarship totaled $3,000.
A recent graduate of Notre Dame Junior/Senior High School, Capuana has excelled academically and athletically. In the classroom, she has taken various AP and Honors courses, maintained a 4.0 GPA, ranked in the top ten of her class, was inducted into the National Honor Society and has earned several academic awards.
On the court and playing field, Capuana has been a member of the varsity tennis team, where she served as captain and won two sectional titles in doubles. She has also been a part of the junior varsity and varsity softball teams.
Additionally, Capuana has demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities, serving as Cadet Company Commander for the school’s NJROTC program. She plans to attend college to major in health sciences on a pre-med track.
“I am pleased to join with Assemblywoman Buttenschon to present a Senator John J. Marchi Memorial Scholarship for Athletic Achievement to Alyssa Capuana,” Sen. Griffo said. “Alyssa is certainly worthy of this recognition. She is an excellent student, a talented athlete, a confident, compassionate and caring person, and a positive and well-rounded role model. There is no doubt that Alyssa has a very bright future ahead of her, and I wish her much success in her endeavors.”
“Today, alongside Sen. Griffo, I am proud to present the Senator John J. Marchi Memorial Scholarship for Athletic Achievement from the Conference of Italian American Legislators to Notre Dame’s Alyssa Capuana,” Assemblywoman Buttenschon said. “Very much a leader both on and off the field, Alyssa consistently presents the highest levels of commitment, compassion, and perseverance in all her endeavors, and truly sets an example of a confident leader worth following. I have no doubt she will exceed all expectations set for her, and I wish her great success in the exciting journey ahead.”
Four Italian American State Legislators scholarships – two academic and two athletic – were presented to New York State residents who are current college students or high school seniors entering college.
Applicants were required to have a grade point average of 85 or higher, be active in community service and extracurricular activities, and demonstrate financial need. In addition to these qualifications, students applying for an athletic scholarship had to be involved in organized sports.
Senators and Assemblymembers who are part of the New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators were each able to select applicants from their legislative districts for each scholarship. Those nominees were then provided to the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute for consideration and winner selection.
The New York Conference of Italian American State Legislators is a bipartisan organization of Assembly and Senate members committed to celebrating the contributions and heritage of Italian Americans throughout New York State while supporting educational achievement.
