Madison County Man Arrested After Shots Fired at Neighboring Homes

EATON, N.Y. — A Madison County man is facing multiple charges after New York State Police say shots were fired at neighboring homes in the town of Eaton, followed days later by a barricade situation that ended peacefully.

According to State Police, the case began on May 28, 2026, at approximately 7:38 p.m., when troopers responded to Trestle Lake Drive in the town of Eaton for a reported neighborhood dispute.

During the investigation, police said dispatchers received additional information from the caller, later identified as Richard Meyers, 65, of Munnsville, who allegedly stated that he had fired multiple rounds at a neighboring residence.

Troopers responded to Meyers’ residence and attempted to make contact. Police said Meyers eventually exited the home and surrendered without incident.

Investigators determined that multiple rounds struck two unoccupied residences and one unoccupied vehicle on Trestle Lake Drive. No injuries were reported.

State Police said members of the Forensic Investigation Unit processed the scenes. Investigators also obtained a search warrant for Meyers’ residence. During the search, police said they seized seven long guns and one pistol.

Following the initial investigation, Meyers was charged with:

  • Two counts of Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree, a Class E felony
  • Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Two counts of Environmental Conservation Law 11-0931, Discharge of a Firearm Within 500 Feet of a Dwelling, a misdemeanor

Meyers was processed at State Police Morrisville and transported to Madison County CAP Court for arraignment. Police said he was released on his own recognizance and scheduled to return to court at a later date.

Police Return After Reported Disturbance

State Police later issued an update stating that on May 31, 2026, at approximately 2:55 a.m., troopers responded again to Trestle Lake Drive for a reported disturbance involving Meyers.

Police said the investigation determined that Meyers had ignited firecrackers on his property. Troopers attempted to speak with him about the incident, but police said he became uncooperative.

State Police also said further investigation revealed Meyers was in violation of an active order of protection issued on behalf of neighboring residents following the incident that had occurred three days earlier.

As a result, police obtained an arrest warrant for Meyers.

When troopers returned to take him into custody, State Police said Meyers refused to comply with lawful orders, slammed the door on troopers, and barricaded himself inside the residence.

Members of the New York State Police Special Operations Response Team and Crisis Negotiation Unit responded to the scene. After several hours of negotiations, police said Meyers surrendered without incident and was taken into custody.

Additional Charges Filed

Following the May 31 incident, Meyers was charged with:

  • Four counts of Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, a Class E felony
  • Four counts of Harassment in the First Degree, a Class B misdemeanor
  • Resisting Arrest, a Class A misdemeanor

Meyers was processed by New York State Police and arraigned in CAP Court. He was remanded to the Madison County Jail in lieu of $500,000 cash bail, $1 million bond, or $2 million partially secured bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Town of Eaton Court on June 5, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.

No injuries were reported in connection with the shots fired incident, according to State Police.

As with all criminal cases, the charges are accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
