Utica Phoenix Media Leads Mohawk Valley with Syracuse Press Club Nominations

By Cassandra Harris Lockwood

As the Syracuse Press Club prepares to honor the region’s best in journalism this Saturday, Utica Phoenix Media is proud to celebrate a milestone moment for our team—and for the Mohawk Valley.

This year, the only two Syracuse Press Club nominations awarded to any journalist or media outlet in the entire Mohawk Valley belong to members of our 95.5 FM The Heat family.

Ron Klopfanstein, host and producer of Hot Seat: Media Monday with Ron Klopfanstein on 95.5 FM The Heat, has been nominated for Best Interview for his powerful piece, “Herkimer, NY family torn apart by ICE.” This work exemplifies journalism at its most essential—grounded in humanity, accountability, and the courage to tell difficult stories.

In addition, Ron Klopfanstein and Jim Hale have been nominated for Outstanding Coverage of Transgender Rights Issues for a series that brings visibility, dignity, and depth to voices too often pushed to the margins. Jim Hale, serving as Photojournalist and AI Content Producer, played a critical role in shaping the storytelling, helping translate lived experiences into compelling, accessible media.

These nominations are not only a point of pride—they represent a significant breakthrough. They are the first Syracuse Press Club nominations in the history of 95.5 FM The Heat, signaling the growing impact and credibility of our work across Central New York.

Ron is no stranger to Syracuse Press Club recognition. In 2024 and 2025, he received awards for investigative journalism and entertainment writing for the print and digital version of The Phoenix, Utica Phoenix Media’s newspaper. These new nominations mark an exciting expansion of that work into audio journalism.

Harris-Lockwood remarked, “I have watched Ron build Hot Seat: Media Monday with enthusiasm, discipline, and a real sense of purpose. As someone who navigates a speech impediment, stepping into audio journalism requires a level of determination that cannot be overstated. To achieve this level of recognition in that space speaks volumes about both his talent and his commitment.

“Jim Hale’s contributions continue to elevate our entire operation. His work behind the camera and in post-production demonstrates how skill and innovation—particularly in the use of AI and visual storytelling—can strengthen local journalism in meaningful ways.

“At Utica Phoenix Media, we believe our responsibility is clear: to serve the community, to amplify the unheard, and to report with integrity and purpose. These nominations affirm that this mission matters—and that the Mohawk Valley has a powerful voice in the broader media landscape.”

From the Team to Ron and Jim: “Congratulations. Your work represents the very best of what we strive to achieve.”

Utica Phoenix Media will be in attendance at Saturday’s awards, proudly representing 95.5 FM The Heat and the Mohawk Valley. he nominations alone ensure that this work has already earned recognition among the region’s best. That is a win for Ron, Jim, 95.5 FM The Heat, Utica Phoenix Media, and the communities whose stories deserve to be heard.

We’re just getting started.
