Utica Zoo Receives Final Results Regarding MeiLin’s Passing

On February 5th, 2026, Red panda of Utica Zoo, MeiLin, was sent to the Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine for necropsy and histopathology. Based on the University’s professional recommendation along with the advisement of the SSP (Species Survival Plan) veterinarians, they decided to pursue additional molecular testing as well, in hopes of providing a clearer picture.
Further testing revealed an intestinal infection as the final diagnosis; however, the cause of the bacterial infection remains unclear. This bacterium commonly lives in the intestines of healthy humans and animals, and typically only becomes a problem when combined with other medical conditions.
Even with the extensive tests performed, they were unable to pinpoint what else could have contributed to the infection. However, even under ongoing veterinary care, MeiLin’s immune system became compromised, which is a condition that would allow bacterial overgrowth to occur. The lack of genetic diversity of the red panda species gives them a higher likelihood of predisposed conditions that could cause weakened immune systems.
Utica Zoo has been working alongside the SSP throughout the entire process, and with their expertise it is said that MeiLin’s cubs contracting something similar is very unlikely. Bao and Momo, who are turning 1 at the end of June, have received several health checks since MeiLin’s passing and are closely monitored. They have been eating, playing, and behaving normally. Animal encounters with these two remain available at Utica Zoo.
