Utica Council of the Blind to Host White Cane Safety Day Walk

UTICA, NY – In celebration of White Cane Safety Day, the Utica Council of the Blind (UCB) will host a community walk on Friday, October 13 at 11am, beginning at Chancellor Park, located at the corner of Bleeker Street and Kent Street.
White Cane Safety Day honors the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and highlights the white cane as a symbol of independence.  The white cane empowers individuals who are blind or visually impaired to move through their surroundings with safety and confidence, while also serving as a visible cue to others to recognize their needs and respect their personal space.
Participants will walk the perimeter of Chancellor Park, beginning at the corner of Bleeker Street and Kent Street.  The walk highlights the importance of the white cane as a symbol of independence and mobility for the blind and visually impaired.
“UCB’s purpose is to educate the public, as well as the blind and visually impaired as to the rights, responsibilities, problems and potentials of the blind and visually impaired; providing maximum opportunities to become self-sufficient, self-supporting and productive members of society,” said UCB member Ashleigh Stratton.
