MVILR Hosts Open House and Senior Services Showcase
In preparation for the upcoming Fall Semester, the Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in
Retirement held its biannual Open House Thursday on the MVCC campus in Rome. MVILR has provided educational experiences, social connections, and lifelong learning opportunities for retirees and seniors since 1997. The Open House provided current members and prospective new members an opportunity to learn about MVILR and to register for classes. More than 200 people attended the event.
This year, the Open House coordinated with the first annual MVILR Senior Services
Showcase. Twenty-five local organizations (including 50 Forward MV, Copper City Community Connection, Alzheimer’s Association CNY, Jervis Public Library, and Oneida County Office for Aging) were available to share information about the services they provide to senior citizens. According to MVILR Program Coordinator Shawn Essafi, “… the Senior Showcase provided an opportunity for our MVILR members to create a connection to 25 local senior services organizations.”
In addition to the 45 classes for its members, MVILR is offering two free programs, open to
the public. On Mondays, the “Music Mondays” program will offer concerts from 12:30 – 1:30 in the MVCC Rome’s Festine Auditorium, featuring Monk Rowe and Liz Simchik 9/23, the Doc Woods Quartet 9/30, Opus Black 10/7, and the Rick Compton Jazz Trio 10/14. The Special Events Program brings in guest speakers each Wednesday from 10:45 – 11:45, also in the Festine Auditorium. This year’s lineup of speakers includes: John Brown (realty), 9/25, John Zogby (elections and polls) 10/2, Mackay Rippey (acupuncture) 10/9, Sheriff Rob Maciol 10/16, Melissa Bartlett 10/23, Jake DiBari 10/30, Christian Stone 11/6, and CABVI 11/13.
