One individual was killed at Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory.

An individual lost their life and as many as 21 people sustained injuries when gunfire erupted outside Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri, on Wednesday afternoon. This incident occurred at the end of a gathering commemorating the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory, according to authorities. The count of individuals affected by the gunfire incident is ongoing and subject to change as police carry on with their probe.

During the day’s second press briefing, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves reported that police detained three people, an increase from the earlier figure of two suspects who had been arrested.

She mentioned that one individual was apprehended following a pursuit on foot by the police.

“Graves voiced his frustration about the day’s events earlier tonight. He mentioned that attendees of the celebration deserved to anticipate a secure setting.”

“At the conclusion of the press briefing, she remarked, ‘We are not in Kansas City.'”

Graves mentioned that the reason behind the shooting remains unknown at this time. She also noted that at least one gun has been retrieved.

The exact number of spectators present is still unknown, but the NPR affiliate KCUR reported that. During the previous year’s celebration march Approximately one million people inundated the city center to participate in the rally.

Graves mentioned that to manage the anticipated number of attendees, 800 law enforcement personnel were present for the parade. This strong police contingent was instrumental in swiftly escorting fans to secure locations when the gunfire erupted and in providing critical first aid to those who had been shot.

Graves stated that gunfire commenced immediately following the conclusion of the parade rally, originating from the area to the west side of Union Station. Footage recorded and circulated on social media platforms depicts throngs of individuals fleeing Union Station, while police units hurried towards the scene.

Graves has stated that it remains uncertain whether any children were among the victims, despite the presence of numerous families at the event.

At the rally, there were 12 individuals who required medical attention, with 11 being children and nine of those having sustained injuries from firearms. Fire Chief Ross Grundyson was not able to confirm the ages of those affected right away.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Mayor Quinton Lucas of Kansas City mentioned that he had considered whether to bring his child to the festivities. He shared that he attended the parade accompanied by his wife and mother.

“When the gunfire started, I, along with numerous others, hurried to find a secure place,” Lucas explained.

In a statement addressed to the inhabitants of the city, the mayor expressed his frustration and stated that he feels deeply saddened.

“Many individuals eagerly anticipate this day, cherishing the memories for the rest of their lives. However, the looming danger of firearm-related violence should not be a part of their recollections, bringing harm to them and their loved ones,” he stated.

Various other prominent figures also attended the celebration of the triumph.

Missouri Governor Mike Parson, alongside First Lady Teresa Parson, and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly were present at the parade when the sound of gunfire erupted.

Personnel from the state law enforcement agencies are supporting local officials in their response activities. While we anticipate further details, we extend our deepest sympathies to those affected. Governor Parson stated on platform X, which used to be known as Twitter.

Kelly stated that she was removed from the area. “out of harm’s way.”

Following the tragic event, Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs who had earlier been celebrating with a victory parade in the city, turned to social media to express his reactions. He posted,  “Praying for Kansas City…”

Mayor Lucas mentioned that the Chiefs had communicated with authorities and relayed that all their players, coaches, and team personnel were present and unharmed.

The day began in a festive mood as throngs of supporters wearing the team’s hues of red, white, and black gathered while players journeyed on a bus through the urban center.

The march was planned to commence at 11 in the morning according to the local clock, followed immediately by a gathering set to take place at Union Station once the march concluded, at roughly a quarter to one in the afternoon.

Law enforcement released statements about gunfire occurring approximately at 2:30 p.m. Central Standard Time.
