When you’ve got a 70-year-old rivalry and just one win separating the two teams in the all-time series, you’re almost guaranteed to get a nail-biter, especially when the average score in the history of the rivalry is 16-16.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen in our Friday Night Matchup pitting Oneida against Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, despite the fact V-V-S was playing without its starting quarterback, lost to an injury last week.
The Red Devils jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and as they say, never looked back. Bryce Palmer caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from backup QB Jackson Horodnick, who’d thrown all of five passes all season, to open the scoring. James Wheeler IV added a 4-yard touchdown to give the Red Devils all the points they’d need.
Palmer and Wheeler each scored touchdowns in the second quarter as well, helping V-V-S take a commanding 35-0 lead at halftime over the Indians, who didn’t get on the board until the fourth quarter. Horodnick threw three touchdown passes for the victors, and Wyatt Falkenmeyer even added a 35-yard field goal in the Red Devils’ 45-14 win, their fourth in the last five games over Oneida.
V-V-S also takes a 35-33-4 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1951, and they’ve got the broadcast video to prove it!
