50 Forward Mohawk Valley Receives Health Equity Innovation Award

UTICA, NY – 50 Forward Mohawk Valley is proud to announce the launch of two new wellness initiatives—Water Aerobics and Energy Water Chi—made possible by a Health and Wellness Award from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.

In a unique cross-sector collaboration, 50 Forward has partnered with the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) to provide these low-impact fitness opportunities. The programs are specifically designed to address health disparities by increasing access to exercise that improves cardiovascular health, joint mobility, and balance for older adults.

The success of this initiative relies on the combined resources of local partners:

  • 50 Forward Mohawk Valley: Facilitating programming and outreach for the 50+ community.
  • CABVI: Providing access to their state-of-the-art, heated indoor pool facility.

“This initiative is a powerful example of what happens when non-profit partner with a shared vision for healthy aging,” said Kelly Walters, Executive Director of 50 Forward. “By combining CABVI’s exceptional and instructor facilitation by 50 Forward, we are breaking down barriers and providing our older adults with the high-quality wellness opportunities they deserve.”

For older adults, water-based exercise offers a “weightless” environment that reduces the risk of injury while providing natural resistance. These programs focus on Improved Balance to reduce the risk of falls, Joint Relief for arthritis and stiffness, and Heart Health through cardiovascular endurance without the strain of high-impact movements.

“CABVI is honored to open our doors and our therapeutic pool to the 50 Forward community,” said Dylan Drexler, CABVI Adaptive Sports and Recreation Manager.“Our facility was built to foster independence and wellness, and by hosting these water fitness programs, we are ensuring that more seniors in the Mohawk Valley have a safe, welcoming space to improve their physical health.”

“As a local nonprofit health plan, our goal is to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Tony Vitagliano, Utica regional president for Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “By supporting these water initiatives, we’re addressing social determinants of health and advancing sustainable solutions that will strengthen long-term wellness throughout the Mohawk Valley.”
