LIVERPOOL, N.Y. – The CNY Diaper Bank, a local, volunteer-run nonprofit that collects diapers for families in need, invites adult individuals, couples, family and friends to virtually participate in its first-ever “You don’t know crap!” trivia night on Friday, Feb. 12, from 8-10 p.m. The event will be emceed by local comedians Phil Farda and Josh Fish. The event is free, though a donation of $25 per person is suggested. All proceeds will go toward the CNY Diaper Bank’s diaper distribution program to keep area babies dry, clean and healthy. The event is sponsored by Midtown Shoe & Repair in Solvay.
Registration is available for those aged 18 and older at CNYDiaperBank.org/events. Participants can play as single players, as part of a couple or on a virtual team of any size. Upon registration, trivia players will receive a Facebook link that will provide access to the event. A Facebook account is not needed to participate. Participants, couples and teams will self-score, and prizes will be awarded at random.
Local restaurants and establishments will offer specials on take-out meals, drinks and cocktail kits for the trivia night and will donate a portion of the sales to the CNY Diaper Bank. Participating businesses include The Brasserie Bar & Bistro, San Miguel Mexican Bar & Grill, Strigo Vineyards, Toss & Fire and WT Brews.
“We love that we’re able to offer community members a fun ‘night in’ this Valentine’s Day weekend,” said Michela Hugo, founder of the CNY Diaper Bank. “In addition to providing an entertaining evening with hilarious comedians and great food and drinks, this event will support our diaper distribution program, which has doubled in the past year due to an increased need in our area.”
Half of all children under 5 years old in Syracuse alone live in poverty, and one out of four lives in extreme poverty. Since an adequate supply of diapers for a single child can cost $100 per month, diapers become an expense many families can’t afford. Though they’re an essential need for babies, diapers are not covered by public safety-net programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or by Women, Infants and Children (WIC) benefits.
The CNY Diaper Bank works with 34 partner agencies in the area to distribute more than 185,000 diapers to over 3,500 local babies and toddlers each month. The organization has distributed more than 3 million diapers since its inception, with nearly 2 million diapers having been distributed in 2020 alone.
An additional way to support the CNY Diaper Bank is by purchasing apparel online from SYR Clothing Co. at SYRClothingCo.com. The streetwear brand has a special collection for the diaper bank featuring onesies, bibs, tops and additional items. SYR Clothing Co. will donate a portion of the sales on every order received on its website in February to the organization, in addition to donating 65% of sales of the CNY Diaper Bank onesie and 50% of proceeds from any purchase made from the special CNY Diaper Bank collection. SYR Clothing Co. will continue to donate 50% of sales from the special collection throughout the rest of the year.
