24-year-old Rome Man Charged With Assaulting 2-year-old

 

On Tuesday, February 12, 2019, the Rome Police Department arrested 24-year-old Brandon J. Shugars, following an investigation into injuries sustained by his 2-year-old son. On that date, the Rome PolicePatrol Division responded to a domestic dispute at Shugars residence. During the course of that investigation, officers inquired into some injuries that were observed on a 2-year-old boy that was in the residence.

Through further investigation and the assistance of the detective division, it was discovered that Shugars had picked up the child by his ears, and slammed his head through the sheetrock after the 2-year-old went to the bathroom on the floor. The child sustained multiple scrapes and bruises to the left side of his face and head. The child was transported to Rome Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Shugars was charged with the following for the domestic incident:
PL 121.11a Criminal Obstruction of Breathing; a class A misdemeanor
PL 145.00 Criminal Mischief in the 4th degree; a class A misdemeanor

Shugars was charged with the following for the child abuse incident:
PL 120.05(9) Assault in the 2 nd degree; a class D felony

Shugars was transported to the Rome Police Department, where he was processed and held for arraignment. Shugars is currently being held at the Oneida County Jail.
