MVCC to offer Open Darkroom course for community photographers starting April 9

This spring, Mohawk Valley Community College will offer a new course, Open Darkroom, an open lab experience that gives community members of all skill levels the opportunity to develop film and create traditional photographic prints using both historical and modern image-making techniques.

Designed for hobbyists, emerging photographers, artists, and anyone interested in working with film and traditional processes, the course will be held Thursdays from April 9 through May 28, 2026, from 5 to 8 p.m. in MVCC’s fully equipped black-and-white darkroom in Academic Building room 273 at the College’s Utica Campus.

During supervised open lab hours, photographers will have access to enlargers, trays, chemistry, and other essential darkroom equipment, with an instructor available to provide guidance and technical support. Each week will also include an optional introductory lesson covering topics ranging from basic darkroom techniques to alternative image-making processes.

Participants must supply their own film and printing paper; all chemistry will be provided in the lab. The cost for the course is $150.
