UTICA, N.Y. – Preschool and kindergarten students ages three through five in Herkimer
County can be eligible for free eye exams and glasses through Vision for Kids, a program
conducted by the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CABVI) and funded by a grant from UpMobility of Little Falls. CABVI Occupational Therapist Britnee Livingston said through the program, children in eight schools throughout Herkimer County are screened by CABVI’s professional staff. Children evaluated with vision problems are issued a voucher for a free eye examination at Wadas Eye Care or Towpath Vision Care. If corrective glasses are recommended, the child is then given a voucher for two pairs of glasses from the CABVI Optical Shop.
Livingston said vision screenings for young children are essential in detecting any vision issues. “Children occupy themselves in play,” she said. They often don’t realize that have vision problems.” Livingston emphasized clear vision is essential for a child’s success in school, social development, and overall well-being. Many children in Herkimer County lack access to basic eye care due to financial hardship or lack of insurance. The Vision for Kids program addresses this critical gap by providing free eyeglasses. By ensuring these children can see clearly, they are empowered to learn more effectively, participate confidently in daily activities, and reach their full potential.
