1. New York correction officers’ union calls for changes to visitation rules as COVID-19 surges
The labor union that represents correction officers in New York called on state prison officials Wednesday to temporarily suspend visitations or put more stringent rules in place amid the surge of COVID-19 cases. The union proposes requiring visitors and vendors to show either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test. Prisons, like any congregate setting, have seen the virus spread quickly during the nearly two years of the pandemic.
2. Crumbling, historic building on Broadway presents a quandary in Newburgh
A historic building on Broadway in Newburgh is deteriorating and many neighbors blame the property owner and city code enforcers for its poor condition. Some said the structure threatens public safety, but the property owner and city officials have so far been unable to settle on a plan to restore or demolish it.
3. New retreat for neurodiverse individuals called a game-changer
“Bring on the Spectrum,” a new retreat built to bring together people with disabilities, will open soon in Albany County. The facility will feature a community space for activities and sensory gym for children and adults. On Wednesday, neurodiverse individuals with the Living Resources art program painted a mural to welcome people to the new space.
