Making the transition from the military to civilian life can come with many challenges, but a new bill could be making the move much easier.
Congressman John Katko (R-NY) announced his Onward to Opportunity Act has passed.
The legislation looks to expand workforce development services in order to help service members and veterans have better access to career opportunities.
Katko says the transition from military to civilian life can be a very vulnerable time and often, there aren’t many resources to help.
“It’s a vulnerable time for marriages, it’s a vulnerable time for the military veterans’ wellbeing. It’s one of the particularly acute times where suicide and other issues come to light. I think part of that happens because they don’t have a road map,” said Katko.
Katko made the announcement Monday at Syracuse University, where the Onward to Opportunity program started back in 2015. He used that program as inspiration for the bill.
