SUNYIT will host a FIRST Lego League (FLL) season kick-off event on Tuesday, August 28, 5:30 p.m., in the Campus Center. The “Senior Solutions” season kick-off program will include the official release of FLL’s “Robot Game and Research Challenge” and robot demonstrations. Volunteers will discuss what the Central New York FIRST tournament season will look like, and there will be opportunities for new teams to form during the event.
“FLL is a sport of the mind,” said Elizabeth Rossi, K-12 outreach coordinator at SUNYIT. “Teams of 9-14 year olds collaborate and compete with gracious professionalism in several areas: Robot Game, Robot Design, Core Values, and Research Presentation.”
Rossi said FLL is a global program that utilizes theme-based robotics and research challenges to engage 9-14 year old kids in science exploration, problem solving, and engineering. FLL gets kids excited about real-world topics and technology, while emphasizing FLL Core Values, which stress team problem-solving, friendly sportsmanship, and community involvement.
Founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen, FIRST is a New Hampshire-based not-for-profit organization which seeks to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology through programs that motivate the pursuit of education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.
Admission to the August 28 event on the SUNYIT campus in Marcy is free, and refreshments will be available. For more information, visit fll.sunyit.edu
