Operating Engineers, National Letter Carriers Unions Endorse Hanna

The announcement came this morning at the construction site of a future Precision Wash in Rome where local union members were working. Union representatives spoke about why they’re supportive of Richard Hanna in his re-election bid for New York’s 22nd Congressional District seat.
Hanna, who is a 25-year member of the Operating Engineers Local 545 in Syracuse, is completing his first term as a legislator in Washington, D.C. Prior to being elected in November 2010, Hanna had never served in public office.
“We don’t support candidates based on political party,” said William Ganey, congressional district liaison for New York-22 and member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 358. “We support candidates who support us. Richard’s been with us with our legislation from day one, so it’s easy to support him.”
“We’re proud to have Richard as a member of our union for years, and he supports our causes,” said Rich Dobie of the Operating Engineers Local 158. “We don’t care if you have a ‘D’ after your name or an ‘R’ after your name, we’re in support of people who support working people: Richard is one of those guys.”
“As a long-time union member and business owner, I support unions and appreciate the role they play in ensuring good working conditions and benefits for families in upstate New York. I’m grateful for the endorsement of the Operating Engineers and Letter Carriers. I will continue to support both worker and employer rights in Congress because a growing economy needs both to function. We need to create a more business-friendly climate in the United States while respecting labor rights – and we can.”
ABOUT THE UNIONS
National Association of Letter Carriers
The National Association of Letter Carriers is the union of city delivery letter carriers working for the United States Postal Service. There are nearly 300,000 members of the NALC, of which about two-thirds are active city delivery letter carriers employed by the U.S. Postal Service.
Approximately 2,500 local branches represent letter carriers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. The NALC is affiliated with the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and the Union Network International.
Operating Engineers Local 158
Local 158 is a “mixed” local, meaning it represents both Operating Engineers working as heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and surveyors in the construction industry, and stationary engineers working inside buildings performing all types of facility maintenance. Additionally, we also have many members who work in shops, quarries and airports, as well as a growing number of public sector units. Our jurisdiction covers 42 counties throughout Upstate New York.
Local 158 was chartered on January 1, 2011, when three autonomous Local unions were merged to form Local 158. The three Locals, 106 headquartered in Albany; Local 545, headquartered in Syracuse; and Local 832, headquartered in Rochester, became Districts of the newly formed Local.
